a collection of projects on circularity
Professors Mueller and Kennedy enjoy a history of collaboration and co-instruction on topics of material circularity in Master of Architecture Thesis Projects, workshops and design work conducted in the MIT Core 3 Design Studio. This collection of prior work by students in the MIT MArch 1 Architecture program and the MIT SMarchs programs in Architecture Design, Building Technology and Computation explores design and constructive techniques for undervalued and locally sourced geometrically varying materials, such as salvaged scrap wood, recycled steel, boulders, salvaged tree forks and discarded hardwood thinnings. Other streams of student work have researched the material optimization of modular components such as cross laminated timber panels and concrete slabs, the histories of Tabbi concrete and the experimental use of oyster shells and renewable additives in earth cast building materials. This database, organized by keywords, represents a collection of this prior work as a foundation for the ODDS & MODS initiative on material circularity in architecture.
