Climate change is gradually damaging the urban landscape of Arles and the Camargue. Rising temperatures in Arles exposes people to heat stress and increasing sea levels in the Camargue threaten the ecosystems of both urban and natural areas. Suspended Field artificially reconstructs nature in Arles through an urban canopy—an artificial habitat where pollinators and humans can coexist.
This structure is designed for temporary deployment and simple disassembly. In this proposal, it is deployed at Place de la République, a historic square with limited access to nature, shade, and and recreational gathering. The structure fosters public life, access to nature, shade and introduces new frictions to the site; the cohabitation of humans and pollinators.
