Trust a Truss, Clear a Creek

Alex Stewart

Project Info

In designing communal housing for the local sawmill workers of Clear Creek, a timber truss system was developed to span across the waterway bisecting the site, literally bridging the gap between to create a large community space above and hang individual residences below. Designed to maximize on-site sourcing and construction, the structural members of the truss consist entirely of minimally processed round wood, sourced from the Jeffrey pines that grow in abundance in the area. Details include a simple steel knife plate joint system connecting the truss members, live edge nail-laminated bearing walls, and sistered purlins made from tree branches, all designed with the goal of maximizing the usage of all parts of the locally sourced timber while minimizing the need for complex machining and milling.
