First fired in the 17th century from the Mystic River clay flats, water-struck brick became the building block of 19th c. Cambridge, Boston and New England. On a very cold day in February 2024, MIT students toured the production process and collected irregularly shaped brick from huge excess stockpiles that had collected for over a century in the factory’s brick ‘boneyard’. The students’ shared collection of ‘odd’ bricks was scanned, characterized and designed as circular materials for a proposed local food hub and farmers market near MIT.
