As a part of the CASTAWAYS BRICK studio, MIT students in architecture and building technology travelled in Spring 2024 to the Pennsylvania factory of Glen Gery Brick / Brickworks, a leading producer of brick that seeks to advance in sustainability and reduce waste.

Glen Gery brickmakers provided a comprehensive tour and industry level engagement, expertise consultations and support for the MIT students’ design work upcycling brick that would otherwise be considered as ‘waste’ by mainstream markets. Production managers and brick engineers joined the CASTAWAYS studio review at MIT in May to continue ongoing discussions around inventing new ways to use waste brick in architecture.
