In Spring 2024, as a part of the CASTAWAYS BRICK studio, MIT graduate students in architecture had a chance to go to brick school at the Local 3 Bricklayers & Allied Craftsmen union training facility in Dorchester, MA.

Guided by master masons, MIT students learned hands-on techniques of brick construction and laid up standard brick walls. The students then shared their waste brick prototypes with the Union masons and gained feedback and advice on their proposals to upcycle broken, irregular, and re-used brick.
